Flying away is sometimes the only way to open up your narrative, to reveal the character's back story. I like that idea. It can be an exciting moment if the reader gets to discover something new and go "Oh wow, I didn't know he had a temper like this." But if I don't reveal something that leads into something big in the next book, it's tough to continue on that same arc of secret and revelation. There's only so much an author can keep from the reader without clogging up the plot. Readers are going to keep coming back to a story they care about even if the author isn't paying attention. And keeping them busy, without restricting them, keeps them coming back for more.*
